Afternoon tea at Les Suites
There are clearly many locations in Funchal where you can take afternoon tea. There are also many prices you can pay up to and including 50 Euros a head. Today we had afternoon tea at Avista Bar, Les Suites at the Cliff Bay. Service was excellent with great waiters. The food was also excellent with a traditional fayre at a comparatively low price of 25 Euros. The outdoor bar area was very nicely presented with a great view of the Ocean. Really can’t think what they could do to improve it. Hereby recommended!!
It could not have been better.
Accommodation: We booked the duplex suite, and it was exactly as per the photos. The room was immaculate with everything you could need, including a well-stocked bar, coffee and tea facilities, and a mini library of books. The in-room lift that takes the bags from the lower level to the higher bedroom was a pleasant novelty for our son. The balconies are lovely sizes, and the views are stunning. Food: The food was fresh and beautifully cooked. The staff were welcoming. Location: a little way from the main bustle of the town but still within walking distance. We walked there most days and got an inexpensive taxi back up the hill. Spa: There is no spa in Les Suites. They advertise one, but it is actually next door in the sister hotel. I soon learned that guests need to book spa treatments before they arrive to avoid disappointment. We were out of season as well, so if you are booking peak periods, expect disappointment. I did manage to get an appointment, but only because there was a last-minute cancellation. It’s a shame they do not tell new guests.
We’ve stayed in a few Portobay hotels. They are all great. Les Suites is definitely the best Portobay that we have stayed in and has the perfect balance of being special without being too formal. Nothing is too much trouble. Breakfast is so relaxing in such a lovely garden. Our duplex apartment was fabulous and the infinity pool is delightful. We will return
If you want a really special holiday this is for you. The suite was magnificent and the view from the private garden breathtaking. Not only did we get champagne and chocolates on arrival but another bottle and a birthday cake arrived from the hotel on my special day. Sitting in the sunshine on the terrace in the Avista restaurant, whether for a snack or a dinner was something special. But if I could highlight the thing that places this hotel above the rest, it is the staff. Without exception the level of charm and service they offer is superb. They seemed to genuinely care that we had the very best experience. It is no surprise that nearly every guest we met were regulars. As one said. “Once you’ve been here, everywhere else is a bit blah!”
Wonderful and relaxing
We had high expectations with this hotel and were not disappointed. It’s a beautiful place with the added advantage of the use of the facilities of the Cliff Bay hotel. We chose a garden suite which had two full size bathrooms which was a pleasant surprise. One had the best walk in shower ever! I arranged a welcome package with champagne, chocolates and water which was very nice and also received the hotels standard welcome gift. They provided plenty of fresh fruit and quality toiletries. House keeping was efficient. We chose to eat breakfast at Les Suites it was always wonderful. Service was excellent and staff friendly and efficient. The food was fresh and well prepared also presented in a delightful way. We visited the Cliff bar on 3 occasions for happy hour which was mostly good. This has a lovely view at sunset. We had lunch at the Lagoon once which was nice. The in room dining options were also very nice. It’s around a 40 minute walk to the cable car and old town and a longer walk the other way to a fishing village mostly along the sea front with places to eat and drink. We took a 48 bus directly outside the hotel to the Monte and came back down on the cable car. This was our first time in Madeira and will visit again and have no hesitation to stay here in the future.
