Two weeks stay: 3 adults and 1 child (3 yo)
We had a very nice stay, 1 kid 3 yo, and 3 adults. It’s a modern and nice hotel with great staff. The food is good and the drinks too. The location is a bit desolate, so after 2 weeks we felt a bit “trapped”. The next time we’ll choose something a bit more central, or at least with more options when it comes to excursions. Guess I should have researched that a bit more. The first impress was really good. When we arrived we got a cold cloth to put on our necks (for the heat) and some freshly made juice. We also got a complimentary bottle of Greek wine, which was nice. On the minus side: The gym was disappointing. I’m a runner, and only 1 of 3 treadmills were operative. If they worked they where too beaten down (probably from the late 90s) to function properly. The whole gym felt rushed and unfinished. We also had a leak in the shower. The bathroom construction seems rushed too, like much else in the hotel. My guess is that this hotel will have lots of damage in a few years due to all the “quick fixes”. But I’m no professional. Tips: If you have children, choose a room with direct access to pool. We regret not having this, as it would have made our stay even more comfortable. Overall, a nice hotel with nice staff and good food.
Segregated beach!
After 11 days at the Hotel and Plakias beach we are informed that we are not allowed to lie on the part of the beach we have been lying on until now. This area is exclusive to the guests who have Premium/VIP/paid extra/stay at the sister hotel Alegria hills. They have a staff that acts as a guard who directs all guests staying at Alegria beach resort to the worse more uncomfortable sunbeds on the part of the beach that is a little more difficult to access for children and people with physical disabilities. In addition, 75% of the comfortable sunbeds are therefore empty while we the most guests crowd onto the less comfortable sunbeds. I think that the inequality when you segregate people wich now also spreads to the beach in Plakias on Crete is a very sad development. Beside this social aspects it is not smart to do a investment that you only use to 25%. What is next step some kind of fence around the premium guests Bech? Without this beachproblem I have given you 5.
Not to recommend
I would rate this as a mediocre experience, and will not come back. Things that I expected better: - food - service - entertainment - playground -kids pool Choose something else, or get disappointed
Happy on the Hills
We stayed at the brand new Alegria on the Hills in June 2023. Our 2-room apartment was spotless and spacious enough for a family with three young children. We even had our own garden with a table and chairs. Breakfast was delicious with lots of different options of real eggs, pancakes, greek yoghurt, sandwiches, sweets, and the opportunity to squeeze your own orange juice. A couple of times we made our own dinner at the apartment, other times we went out to eat. There are lots of good restaurants nearby. There are four pools, two on the Hills and two at the main resort. They are not heated, but that was fine when we visited in June. The beach is close by. It is spotlessly clean with crystal clear water, shallow enough for the kids, yet deep enough to swim. There are cute lizards hiding in the bushes of the well-manicured gardens. All the staff were really nice. A big thanks for receiving us so well when we arrived exhausted at 12.30 am. We received sandwiches, something to drink and were shown to our room. They even carried our luggage for us. This hotel surpassed all our expectations. All the things we were unsure of: are the hills too steep, will it be too windy, will we be cramped? None were an issue during our stay. The only real issue was having to drive nearly 2 hours from Chania airport. If I were to nitpick, I would say the cleaning staff leave too much water on the floor which makes them dangerously slippery, and also the pillows are way too thick, which meant I slept without one. I also wish hotel staff were more informed about Apollo activities. But these are just details, really. What I will remember the most is the feeling of waking up to the stunning view of the mountains and ocean. I would definitely stay at hotel Alegria again, and definitely choose the "on the hills" part of the hotel again. We were really happy here.
Great resort
This fairly new resort is situated in the eastern part of Plakias bay. It is nicely set out in the terrain and different buildings have pools to suit all. But the lovely beach is just a few steps away, with free sun beds and umbrellas for guests. The hotel is very clean, and staff friendly. Breakfast is top class.
